Equine Specialist Skills Workshop

This workshop will include experiential, hands-on interaction with our equine partners!
In this one-of-a-kind training, equine professionals will deepen their understanding of equine behavior, learn new ways to strengthen their personal and professional relationships with equines, and practice advanced handling and facilitation skills for working safely and effectively with clients in equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy. This training is a great complement to PATH Intl.'s Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) Workshop.

Presenter Information:
Hallie Sheade, PhD, LPC-S, RPT-S
PATH Intl. CTRI/ESMHL Dr. Sheade is the founder of Equine Connection Counseling, devoted solely to the practice of equine assisted counseling with children, teenagers, and adults outside of Fort Worth, TX. She is also the co-founder of PATH Intl. Member Center, S.T.E.P.S. With Horses. Dr. Sheade received her doctoral training in animal assisted therapy at the University of North Texas. Dr. Sheade is also an equine professional and has over 30 years experience with horses. Furthermore, Dr. Sheade is a Faculty Candidate for PATH Intl. ESMHL workshops to train and evaluate equine specialists. and serves on the PATH Intl. Health and Education Advisory Committee and Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Work Group. Dr. Sheade is also the author of the book, Healing Through Horses: Equine-Assisted Counseling and Psychotherapy, and is committed to furthering the field of EAC by authoring manuscripts, presenting at local, national, and international conferences, and by training interns in the practice of EAC. |

PATH Intl. CTRI/ESMHL CHA Certified Level 3, 4 Laura Hamrin works with all disciplines helping to build confidence in both the horse and the client. She is a CHA IRD clinic staff, CHA standard certified, and a PATH CTRI/Mentor and ESMHL certified. She is a leader in equine-assisted services and mentors and trains new professionals. |

Licensing Boards as well as PATH Intl.'s criteria for both certified professionals and professionals seek hours towards completion of certification.
While we do not apply for our trainings to be pre-approved by all of the mental health licensures, if you will look under the specifications for each licensure you will see that our trainings qualify to be used as CEs with most of them. We will provide you with any needed documentation regarding attendance and workshop information (including learning objectives) if needed. There are more specifications concerning this criteria listed under each type of licensure.

Learning Objectives
- Describe equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy and associated terminology
- Identify key equine herd dynamics
- Discuss important aspects of human-equine relationship
- Identify safe practices and potential safety concerns when interacting with equines
- Apply knowledge of equine behavior and emotion to work with clients
- Describe and demonstrate ethical equine handling practices
- List neurobiological benefits of human-equine interaction
- Identify and apply key equine welfare principles
- Summarize equine stressors and strategies to reduce stress
- Practice and apply strategies to safely and ethically address problem behaviors
- Identify key criteria in evaluating equine suitability for equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy
- Learn and apply ethical decision-making to create a safe physically and emotionally-safe environment for both human and equine participants
- Discuss roles and boundaries in mental health professional-equine specialist relationship
- Develop and discuss role of self-awareness and self-advocacy in role as equine specialist
- Describe risk management strategies, including certification options
- Demonstrate competency in effectively using facilitative responses to promote client progress
Participation in this 2-day workshop and/or the ½ day PATH Intl. ESMHL Prep workshop is not a guarantee that the participant will successfully pass the PATH Intl. ESMHL Skills Test required to become a PATH Intl. Certified ESMHL.
If Hallie Sheade, one of the facilitators in this workshop, is acting as a PATH Intl. Faculty Evaluator for the PATH Intl. ESMHL Workshop and Skills Test event which participant may be attending, Hallie Sheade is prohibited from being the evaluator for participant’s PATH Intl. ESMHL Skills Test if participant takes part in Skills Test practice with Dr. Sheade. In such a case, participant may need to contact PATH Intl. to make alternate arrangements to complete the Skills Test.
If Hallie Sheade, one of the facilitators in this workshop, is acting as a PATH Intl. Faculty Evaluator for the PATH Intl. ESMHL Workshop and Skills Test event which participant may be attending, Hallie Sheade is prohibited from being the evaluator for participant’s PATH Intl. ESMHL Skills Test if participant takes part in Skills Test practice with Dr. Sheade. In such a case, participant may need to contact PATH Intl. to make alternate arrangements to complete the Skills Test.
